| During
activities, teachers participate with a “play-by-play”,
describing actions instead of directing. |
- “Mary
and Sam both have red train engines.
Ann’s is blue. Joe’s train is
the biggest with 6 drive wheels. Some have 6 but most have only
4. Mia the engineer blows her whistle and
goes through the tunnel and under the trestle.
Yikes! Joe’s green train has derailed!
Bob’s diesel train has a crane.
It will rescue Joe’s train."
By
describing the children’s actions the teacher creates
an environment where:
|
- Self
esteem is built by telling children that their
actions and ideas (not the teacher’s) are interesting.
- Vocabulary
grows by
using words to sort the concepts of play into size,
color, rank, amount, position, etc.
- Correct
sentence structure is modeled:
possessives, conjunctions, comparative, descriptive
words, etc.
Story Time

Book Corner
|
| Stories are read through out the morning. A teacher
often reads at the request of a single child.
Once the story has begun, other children cozy up and
join in for Story Time. Old favorites are read again
and again. Repetition is invaluable for building the
language skills of pre-readers! |
Books are always available for the children to enjoy
on their own. In our book corner children can snuggle
up on comfy pillows to enjoy a favorite book. |
